KEY POINTS

Livestock slaughtering and meat production quarterly trend movements for September 2018:
  • Cattle slaughter increased 79,400 head (or 4.1%) compared with the June quarter and increased by 237,500 head (or 13.2%) year on year.
  • Calf slaughtered increased 5,600 head (or 5.1%) when compared to the June quarter and increased 12,300 head (or 12.0%) year on year.
  • Sheep slaughter increased by 288,700 head (or 12.1%) compared with the June quarter and increased by 784,400 head or (41.3%) year on year.
  • Lamb slaughter decreased 132,300 head (or 2.3%) compared with the June quarter but increased by 94,900 head (or 1.7%) year on year.
  • Pig slaughter increased by 5,500 head (or 0.4%) compared with the June quarter and increased by 34,800 head (or 2.6%) year on year.
  • The number of chickens slaughtered increased by 1.8% to 163.7 million this quarter. This is the largest number slaughtered since trend estimates were introduced in 1970.
  • Chicken meat production increased by 2,400 tonnes (or 0.8%) compared with the June quarter but decreased by 4,200 tonnes (or 1.4%) year on year.
  • Brokers and dealers receivals of wool decreased by 2,200 tonnes (or 2.4%) compared with the June quarter and decreased by 2,500 tonnes (or 2.6%) year on year.
